To further examine the role of HSP47 in blood clots, they compared mice that have platelets with HSP47 to mice that have platelets without HSP47. This pattern suggests that having less HSP47 protects hibernating bears from blood clot formation. In comparing the blood from different seasons, Thienel and colleagues discovered that HSP47, a protein involved in platelet adhesion and clot formation, was less prevalent in the blood of hibernating bears. To study this phenomenon, scientists at Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich, led by Manuela Thienel and Tobias Petzold, collected blood samples from thirteen bears during their hibernating months as well as during their more active spring months. Scientists have recently uncovered what it is about hibernating bears that protects them, and how that phenomenon is paralleled across different mammals, including pigs, mice, and humans. However, hibernating bears experience even longer periods of immobility without the danger of developing these kinds of blood clots. When taking long international flights, we are often advised to walk around and stretch our legs to avoid deep venous thrombosis, or blood clots, from forming due to our immobility.

Made in Japan- Akio Morita Book summary Jan. This is an epic war between good and evil, a gory, glorious story that will thrill the millions of hyper-devoted readers of "The Shining" and wildly satisfy anyone new to the territory of this icon in the King canon. Then Dan meets the evanescent Abra Stone, and it is her spectacular gift, the brightest shining ever seen, that reignites Dan’s own demons and summons him to a battle for Abra’s soul and survival. Set several decades after the events of its predecessor, the film stars Ewan McGregor as Danny Torrance, a man with psychic abilities who struggles with childhood trauma. Aided by a prescient cat, he becomes “Doctor Sleep.” It is based on the 2013 Stephen King novel of the same name, and is a sequel to Stanley Kubrick 's The Shining (1980). Finally, he settles in a New Hampshire town, an AA community that sustains him, and a job at a nursing home where his remnant “shining” power provides the crucial final comfort to the dying. Haunted by the inhabitants of the Overlook Hotel where he spent one horrific childhood year, Dan has been drifting for decades, desperate to shed his father’s legacy of despair, alcoholism, and violence. But as Dan Torrance knows, and tween Abra Stone learns, The True Knot are quasi-immortal, living off the “steam” that children with the “shining” produce when they are slowly tortured to death. They look harmless-mostly old, lots of polyester, and married to their RVs. On highways across America, a tribe of people called The True Knot travel in search of sustenance. Beside Taita stand his proteges, Lostris, daughter of Lord Intef, beautiful beyond her fourteen years and Tanus, proud, young army officer, who has vowed to avenge the death - at Intef's hand - of his father, and seize Lostris as his prize.Together they share a dream - to restore the majesty of the Pharaoh of Pharaohs on the glittering banks of the Nile. 'Superlatively evocative.Smith`s descriptions hardly falter over 500 pages and has relentless momentum.' Observer'Big, brave and blockbusting … brilliantly detailed descriptions of life on the Nile’ Mail On Sunday'Grand mythical material…. But Taita - a wise and formidably gifted eunuch slave, sees him only as a symbol of a kingdom's fading glory. Now the Valley of the Kings lies ravaged by war, drained of its lifeblood as weak men inherit the cherished crown. In the city of Thebes at the Festival of Osiris, loyal subjects of the Pharaoh gather to pay homage to their leader. Bagieu delivers a pièce de résistance that succinctly summarizes the obstacles and victories of these daring women. Athenian who disguised herself as a man in order to practice gynecology and Leymah Gbowee, a Liberian social worker who escaped an abusive marriage and assisted other female survivors of violence. Some names are relatively recognizable, such as Temple Grandin and Nellie Bly, while others may be less so, such as Las Mariposas, Dominican sisters who became revolutionaries and human rights activists Naziq al-Abid, a Syrian humanitarian and feminist Agnodice, a fourth-century B.C.E. The lives of 33 women of varying geographical, ethnic, religious, and cultural backgrounds are highlighted in about 10 pages each of colorful, expressive, and often humorous cartoon panels-enough to serve as a catalyst for learning more. This French graphic novel offers a satisfying collection of minibiographies about bold women-some contemporary, others from centuries ago-who overcame fearsome odds to achieve a variety of goals, becoming the first black woman in space, a rapper in Afghanistan, a pioneering volcanologist, and more. Within this pretext it wraps Moore's entire philosophy, the idea of a separate plane made of concepts where thought is form, an exploration of the Kabbalah, ruminations on hope and the meaning of life and one-liners delivered by hiply unhip characters. Superficially it's the story of a girl named Sophie who becomes possessed by a fictional character, a living story and warrior-mystic named Promethea. He's the author of the superhero revision Watchmen, political thriller V For Vendetta, and Jack the Ripper saga From Hell, with a penchant for mysticism, humour, and cramming literary worthiness into apparently lowbrow genre work. Promethea is one of the more recent comics by Alan Moore, whose name alone ought to sell it. For the rest of you, this could get complicated. For the comic-savvy crowd I'd describe Promethea as being like Ghost World crossed with The Maxx on the usual drugs. Small and cramped, offensive shades of green and yellow on the walls. The place is like that: a mix of familiar and very much not familiar. But when Tattoo Boy-Niko, the flyer said his name was Niko-sits across from her, it’s in a startlingly high-end Eames chair. Most of the furniture is as trash as the trash couch, mismatched and thrifted and hauled in off the street. The quintessential early twenties trash couch. The type you crash on, bury under textbooks, or sit on while sipping flat Coke and speaking to no one at a party. That’s the first thing the guy with the tattoos says when August settles onto the rubbed-off center cushion of the brown leather couch-a flaking hand-me-down number that’s been a recurring character the past four and a half years of college. The protagonist of the series is Kirito ( CV Yoshitsugu Matsuoka). His vision when it comes to writing is for people to see games in a positive light. For him, playing video games is not an illness for social life or just a way to escape reality. Originally published on a secret section of the old website, Kawahara later claimed it wasn’t canon.Īccording to Reki Kawahara, he wrote the Sword Art Online series because he loves video games. The infamous chapter 16.5 is also one of the things many SAO fans mention when talking about the series. The first volume came out on April 10, 2009. Kawahara won the grand prize this time, and as a result, ASCII Media Works published light novel versions of Sword Art Online and Accel World. In 2008, he joined the competition again by writing the Accel World, which takes place in the same universe of the Sword Art Online series. The first arc of the series is titled Aincrad. As time went on, he added three more main arcs ( Fairy Dance, Phantom Bullet, Alicization), and some short stories ( mainly the compilation of the light novel’s 8th volume). Instead, he just published it as a web novel under the pseudonym Fumio Kunori. However, the series surpassed the page limit, so he didn’t submit it. Kawahara initially planned to write the series as a competition entry for the 2002 ASCII Media Works Dengeki Game Novel Prize. The Birth of Sword Art Online Light Novel Series Technically, she wasn’t even her sister-at least not genetically. Her little sister shouldn’t remember her. The wide-eyed, trembling girl standing in front of her slowly nodded, and Sophie’s heart swelled even as it plummeted into the sour pit of her stomach. The question slipped from Sophie’s lips before she could stop it, and the weighted words seemed to hit the floor of the messy bedroom with a thud. So together-as one-they locked hands and started the long, slippery descent. Time to see their world for what it really was. Time to stop believing the pretty stories they’d been fed all their lives. Whatever waited in those murky depths was far more than a secret. She glanced at her friends as they braced themselves for the dangerous journey ahead, and found their expressions mirroring her own.
